LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY

lasting power of attorney

WHAT IS A POWER OF ATTORNEY?

A Power of Attorney simply allows someone to make decisions on your behalf, if you are unable to manage your affairs. Our guidance on Powers of Attorney’s can help you make such decisions.

A lasting power of attorney (LPA) is a legal document in which an individual (the “donor”) appoints one or more people (known as “attorneys”) to make decisions and act on their behalf in the event that they lose mental capacity.

There are two types of LPAs: one for property and financial affairs and one for health and welfare.

An LPA can only be used when the donor has lost capacity and it is registered with the Office of the Public Guardian.

  1. A Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney allows your chosen person to handle your bank accounts, investments, bills and property.

  2. A Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney covers decisions about your health and care.
